Hamilton County Fairgrounds Every July the fairgrounds are home to the excitement of the Hamilton County Fair. Enticing treats, fun entertainment, eye-catching attractions, and great rides, makes this fair one not to miss. During the summer, weekly car racing is held at the fairgrounds on Saturday night. Kendall Young Library This historic library was a gift to the city by Kendall Young, who left his entire estate for the construction and maintenance of a free public library. It was dedicated in 1905, expanded and restored in 1998 through donations to the People’s Project. The library houses three extraordinary collections: the Foster Doll Collection, the Abastenia Eberle Sculptures, and the Von Ness Native American Artifacts. You are sure to be amazed at this wonderfully historic treasure. Jane Young House Kendall Young settled in Webster City after his adventures as a farmer, soldier, fisherman, merchant, and Gold Rush participant. He married Jane Underdown in 1858 and soon moved here to open a mercantile and the city’s first bank. It was in the kitchen of this home in 1888 that young Teressa Treat asked her neighbor to donate to a fund to build a library. He turned her down, saying the group would never raise enough money to build a suitable library. The city was therefore quite surprised in 1896 when Kendall Young left his estate to the city for the express purpose of building a library. The main floor housed a temporary library. The house was relocated to make room for the beautiful library and moved again for the expansion. Today it is the home of the Webster City Women’s Club. Webster City Community Theatre Audiences have enjoyed quality comedies, musicals, dramas, mysteries and children’s productions since Webster City Community Theatre was organized in 1968. The Performing Arts Center, acquired and remodeled in 1992, is available for recitals, meetings, receptions and family gatherings.

This rare authentic 1,800 sq. ft. 3 BR/2BA Frank Lloyd Wright 'Usonian' home exudes elegance and comfort. Designed in 1941, built with the architect's participation in 1951, and lovingly restored to purists' standards in 2006, this house is an architectural treasure. Built of cypress and brick, the Stuart Richardson house is one of only a few that Wright designed using a hexagonal module - the geometric shape scribed into the concrete floor then followed in the placement of walls. As a consequence, all angles in the house are either 60- or 120-degrees - only two right angles can be found in the structure. Although some may think of its name as a political statement, Liberal really got its name from a spirit of hospitality and generosity. In the 1880s, water was a rare commodity in southwest Kansas. Travelers and ranchers needed a place to rest their livestock and quench their thirst as they headed west. Available water was often very expensive.<br /> <br /> S.S. Rogers homesteaded this area, digging a well for his own use. Visitors were always granted permission to use the well and always offered to pay for the privilege. “Water is always free here,” was Rogers’ reply.<br /> <br /> Visitor’s replies of, “that’s mighty liberal of you,” helped the area become known as “The Liberal Well” and travelers were encouraged to stop. Just a few miles off the southern Santa Fe Trail route, Liberal became an important stop in the history of the westward migration. Rogers later added a goods store and some people decided to stay and farm this area. In 1886, he put a post office in his store and in 1888, the small community known as Liberal, KS was incorporated.<br /> <br /> Not long after, the railroad headed west and created a depot, bringing permanent commerce to the area. The two Rock Island Depot buildings, both fully restored, can still be enjoyed. The Greer Eating House, which was the restaurant and motel in the past, houses a restaurant and the VA Medical Clinic. The main depot building houses the Liberal Chamber of Commerce and includes an area dedicated to railroad memorabilia.<br /> <br /> Another piece of railroad history, 13 miles northeast of Liberal, is the Mighty Samson of the Cimarron, a 1,269 foot railroad bridge built in 1939 and considered an engineering marvel of its day.<br /> <br /> During World War II, Liberal was used as a training site for the U.S. Army Corps pilots. Planes would stop and refuel in Liberal in transit between the Pacific and Atlantic campaigns.

The Hawaiian Mission Houses Historic Site and Archives (HMH) includes three restored houses, two of which are the oldest houses in Hawai'i, and a research archives which provides a unique glimpse into 19th-century Hawai'i both onsite and online. The extensive education programs expand the site's relevance and positive impact on the community, and the visitor experience is further enhanced by an orientation center and a gift shop. The site was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965 and is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums since 1972 with re-accreditation earned in 2010. HMH is the business name of the Hawaiian Mission Children's Society, a not-for-profit organization and genealogical society founded in 1852, and was formerly known as Mission Houses Museum.
