Zilpha Keatley Snyder, an avid early reader, decided at the age of eight that she was a fiction writer. After many sporadic attempts at novel writing during her high school and college years, her literary efforts ceased for almost ten years while she concentrated on being a teacher, wife and mother. It was teaching in the upper elementary grades that influenced her decision to try to write for children.
