As you view my images you’ll find out a lot about me. For instance, I see natural landscapes and the creatures that call them home as being at the same time grand works of art and also places for renewal, connection and education. It’s probably also apparent that I love to travel. The world is a big, beautiful and fascinating place, and my travel images aim to show it in all its glory. Photographing people and their cultures is one big reason I travel, and I hope my images tell you something about what makes all of us unique, along with all that we share. In short, despite all my photographs of nature and landscape, I am also a photographer of people, especially in those candid moments: with family or friends, with their pets, or simply alone. I’m very serious about photography as art, as a way to communicate what is more difficult (even impossible) to say with words. I don't tend to shoot popular subjects or incorporate trendy looks into my images. My influences from without are as numerous and varied as the whole world is. Influences from within include my past careers as an earth scientist and also a teacher. Both continue to inform my photography. For example my landscape images often highlight aspects of the region’s geologic history. My strong affinity for nature and animals of all kinds is a major influence as well. Global travel has given me a keen awareness of human impacts on the environment. We are forever connected after all - to the earth which gives us everything, and to each other. I am an avid blogger, and my newer images turn up there with interesting back-stories or in an educational context. Please click on the blog button to see what is current. I am exploring effects of ongoing climatic, economic and cultural changes taking place in the west as a whole. In 1931, Elmo Redman and his wife Birdie put up an old bus body on us highway 12 in Montrose, Minnesota. It seated 6 people. His clientele included truckers and travelers. The favorite menu item was a Hamburger Steak with American Fries. Many truckers were “bull haulers”. They would haul livestock to South St. Paul and take freight back to their home towns. Check out our web site for more old pictures. Later on Red replaced the bus with a larger bus that seated more people. In 1947 he built a stucco building that would serve as Red’s Café. Red sold his beloved café in the Sixties to a Mrs. Sipe. She ran it for a couple of years but had to sell due to ill health. Jack and Mary Johnson bought it and ran it for several years. On February 1, 1975, Larry and Diane Miller purchased Red’s Café. We still own Red’s. In 1984 we added a large dining area. In 1988 we expanded the kitchen. We extensively remodeled the whole place in 2006. We have been catering for about 25 years, serving as many as 1,600 people at one time. We invite you to stop in. We still serve the venerable hamburgers and malts. We have beer, wine and mixed drinks and many yummy items on our menu. Anne is a Professor of Landscape Architecture and Planning at MIT, where she teaches courses on urban landscape design and planning, photography, and landscape history. Before MIT, she taught at Harvard and at the University of Pennsylvania. Her most recent book, Daring to Look: Dorothea Lange’s Photographs and Notes from the Field (University of Chicago Press, 2008) received the 2009 Great Place Book Award from the Environmental Design Research Association and the 2009 John Brinckerhoff Jackson Book Prize from the Foundation for Landscape Studies for a book that “breaks new ground.” It was a finalist for the Art Historian Association\'s 2009 Art Book Award and for the American Association of Publishers\' 2008 PROSE Awards in Art and Art History. Her first book, The Granite Garden: Urban Nature and Human Design (Basic Books, 1984), is still in print and has been published in Japanese and Portuguese. In 1984 it received the President\'s Award of Excellence from the American Society of Landscape Architects, and, in 2009, the American Planning Association named it one of the “essential books” of the past century. Her second book, The Language of Landscape (Yale, 1998) is a required text in landscape architecture and landscape studies.
