Morehead is located in Eastern Kentucky, nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. It was founded in 1854 by Colonel John Hargis and named after James T Morehead, a politician who served as governor of Kentucky from 1834 to 1836. Morehead is located within the Daniel Boone National Forest along the Sheltowee Trace Trail and recently became the third city in Kentucky to be designated a Trail Town.
