I fell in love with photography at age 15 when I got my first SLR camera for Christmas back in 1983. I wanted to be a National Geographic photographer but photography school was too expensive so I never pursued it professionally. In my 20's, I didn't have time to do much photography due to... well, life. At around age 32 I decided I wanted to be happy, finally, and I wanted to take control of my life instead of being controlled by my job. So I started getting back into my photography and practicing and shooting and reading everything I could get my hands on and teaching myself how to be a better photographer. So at age 34 I started my photography business. This was in 2002 about 6 months after 9/11. Probably not the best time to start a business, but for me it was now or never. It was the best decision I have ever made in my life! I put everything I had into it with the attitude that "I will make this happen!" Failure was not an option. To my surprise... three years later, I was shooting 50 weddings a year. The best part... I am happy! I love what I do, I love my life... What could be better than that? About My Photography I don't like to label my style of photography. I just go with what I am feeling from the bride and groom and what I am feeling from the wedding location. The light, the colors, the textures all play a part in how I shoot. I bring a relaxed, fun and confident attitude to my shoots. I get told by my clients that I am a joy to work with and I make them feel very comfortable in front of the camera. I get people at my weddings telling me, "Dude, your an awesome photographer!" I'm like, "You haven't even seen the pictures yet." "Don't need to. I can just tell by watching you that you're an awesome photographer. You never miss anything. You're just right on it." Hello, and welcome to Desiree Steele's Photography! I have been taking pictures of people and places since I was in high school; nearly 23 years. In the past few years my business has taken off and I am having a blast capturing beautiful smiles, pouts, cries, dance moves, "aha" moments and such. I take pictures for the pure joy of giving back and I have been extremely blessed in the process. My pictures are very organic in nature and I love taking time to capture YOU and YOUR FAMILY. My hopes is that your session will be relaxed and memories will be forever captured. I do not have a set sitting fee, I let that be led by you and what you feel you can afford. My hope is that ALL can have beautiful memories captured through my photography. You can purchase fully edited professional prints through my website or for $75.00 you can purchase a flashdrive of 20 beautiful shots to do with as you please. Anything over the 20 shots will be $2.00 a picture. However, I can not guarantee quality prints unless ordered through my website. I also have a small travel fee of $25.00 for all shoots that I have to travel north of the river(aka Lady Bird Lake) or outside of the Austin city limits. Why do I not charge a typical photographer's fee? Through some difficult situations in my life and my sister having a stroke, I have come to realize the importance that everyone should have beautiful pictures of their family. Pictures are what memories are made of and everyone (no matter what your financial circumstance) should have them and I want to be that person to bring them to you. Thank you for visiting my website! My love for photography began as a child. I remember going to the National Museum of the Air Force when I was 9 or 10 years old. I spent every penny I had buying and shooting all the rolls of 110 film I could get my hands on. It took me weeks to save up enough to get them all developed (aahhh digital). I found the pictures again a few years ago. The pictures were nothing spectacular, but I'll never forget the rush I got taking them. Jump ahead to high school where I took my first photography class and learned about exposure, composure, and developing. After that I got away from serious photography until just a few years back. My father got a fancy new camera, a Nikon D90, and I had to have one too. I tried out a lot of lower grade equipment before learning the reasons why the pro grade stuff cost soooo much. There really is a huge difference in what you can do with it. But then I hit another wall. Even though my gear was good, I couldn't get all the shots I was trying for. My dad was having similar issues and we discovered a local photography school, Light Photographic Workshops. And the rest, as they say, is history. Not really, but I did learn how to fully use my camera and have continued to strive to be a better photographer ever since. I am fortunate to live in an area filled with great places to shoot, and to have friends and family that are so supportive of my work.

My photography began as an offshoot of my greater passion - birding.  It has since evolved to encompass all of Nature.  All of the animals and plants shown here are wild, unless otherwise noted.  Please note, new photos are placed at the beginning of each gallery. I am originally from Pennsylvania, USA, but immigrated to Canada in 2006.  I lived in Ottawa, Ontario for six years.  I currently reside in Gwangju, South Korea, with my wife Melanie.  We are both middle school English teachers in South Korea. For those interested, the majority of photos here were taken with my Sony Alpha A100 with a 75-300mm f5.6.  I recently upgraded to a Canon 7D, 100-400mm f4.5/5.6, which will be my primary set up from now on.

My passion...is to capture expressions and emotion in my photographs. I have been fascinated with photography since I was in grade school. I was always the one with the camera, getting great action and group shots. I never went anywhere without my camera and, everyone has ALWAYS depended on me to capture the memories of every event. Through the years, I have long considered photography as just simply an enthusiastic hobby, however, it became more intensified upon the birth of my child. Now, I never put the camera down. It wasn't until 8 years ago when the company I worked for, for 22 years, sold. Everyone told me that this was the time for me to pursue my dreams, and now I am. I started shooting weddings and quickly found out how much I love taking candids and getting people's expressions. Most of the time, I don't want my subjects to pose. I love to capture them in the moment. I have recently been shooting local sport tournaments and can I tell you how awesome action photography is for me. I was recently told by a mom that it is amazing how I capture the personality of a child as if I've photgraphed them for years, when in fact I just meet them. That is why I love to do what I do. I am a perfectionist in everything that I do. My goal is to be at the right place at the right time and to get that hard to get shot. I want to see excitement and joy in people's faces when they see the pictures that I have taken of their families and friends.
