Konečne o Jozefovi Tisovi ako o duchovnom vodcovi slovenského národa. Dr. Jozef Tiso sa narodil vo Veľkej Bytči na strednom Považí 13. októbra 1887 ako druhý syn Gašpara Tisu a Terézie Budíškovej. Mal staršieho brata Pavla, mladšieho Jána a štyri mladšie sestry: Máriu, Hanku, Jozefku a Teréziu. Na gymnáziu študoval v Žiline a v Nitre. Bohoslovecké štúdiá absolvoval na slávnom Pazmaneu vo Viedni, kde ho r. 1910 biskup Fischer-Colbrie vysvätil na kňaza. O rok neskôr získal hodnosť doktora teológie. Po vysviacke bol kaplánom v Oščadnici na Kysuciach, potom v Rajci a v Bánovciach nad Bebravou. Odtiaľ bol povolaný za profesora teológie do Nitry a po vysvätení dr. Kmeťku na nitrianskeho biskupa stal sa jeho tajomníkom. Od roku 1924 až do smrti bol bánovským farárom a neskoršie dekanom. Tak ho nazývali jeho farníci aj vtedy, keď bol zvolený za prezidenta Slovenskej republiky a z Bratislavy takmer každú nedeľu prichádzal do Bánoviec. Ako hlboko vzdelaný, s ľudom úzko spätý, publicisticky veľmi aktívny činiteľ bol r. 1925 zvolený za Hlinkovu Slovenskú ľudovú stranu za poslanca pražského snemu. Keď r. 1927 Hlinkova strana vstúpila do vlády, dr. Tiso sa v nej stal ministrom zdravotníctva. V politickom zápase o autonómiu Slovenska, ktorý vrcholil v r. 1938, dr. Tiso v parlamente, v tlači a na verejných zhromaždeniach najvýraznejšie obhajoval práva slovenského národa a dôsledne hlásal ideu zjednotenia Slovákov. V r. 1937 na čele delegácie Spolku sv. Vojtecha navštívil amerických Slovákov. Po smrti vodcu slovenského národa preláta Andreja Hlinku (16. augusta 1938) dr. Tiso sa jednomyseľne stal jeho nástupcom. Na dni 5. a 6. októbra 1938 zvolal do Žiliny zjazd Hlinkovej strany, na ktorý prišli aj predstavitelia ostatných slovenských politických strán (okrem komunistov) a kde bola vyhlásená autonómia Slovenska. Tiso sa stal predsedom autonómnej slovenskej vlády. Po vyhlásení samostatnej Slovenskej republiky 14. marca 1939 bol zvolený za predsedu vlády a dňa 26. októbra 1939 bol zvolený za prvého prezidenta Slovenskej republiky. Po násilnej česko-komunistickej okupácii Slovenska ho nepriatelia slobody slovenského národa 15. marca 1947 odsúdili na trest smrti a 18. apríla 1947 ho popravili.
